tactical voting

tactical voting
The practice of voting for a candidate other than the voter’s first preference, in order to keep out another candidate of whom the voter particularly disapproves. A Labour supporter in a seat where the Liberal Democrats are the most effective challenger to the Conservatives might vote tactically for the Liberal Democrats. Having assessed the candidates’ relative strength, the voter would be voting for a second-choice party with a better chance of winning than their first choice, thereby increasing the chance of defeating the Conservatives, the party most disliked. Tactical voting worked to the advantage of the centre-left parties and the disadvantage of the Conservatives in 1997 and to a lesser extent again in 2001.
